The new Mila Costi’s short film “A goat to follow” took home the prize at the third edition of the contest held by Fondazione Demarchi and the Autonomous Province of Trento. Exploring work, community, and everyday life in a unique way, the film follows the protagonist’s growth after an unexpected encounter… with a goat!

“The work impresses with the maturity through which it transforms an everyday and seemingly marginal episode into a profound reflection on the theme of choice. The parallelism between the animal’s instinctive freedom and the protagonist’s more hesitant journey builds an original and effective narrative device, capable of guiding the viewer through a process of progressive awareness. The storytelling—essential and minimalist—finds its strength in rhythmic consistency, meticulous cinematography, and a balanced use of music and dialect, which root the story in an authentic cultural context. The intentionally monotonous initial pace, mirroring the protagonist’s life, intelligently prepares the ground for the final change. While maintaining great formal simplicity, the short film demonstrates ambition and sensitivity, succeeding in speaking of freedom, self-determination, and ethics without ever forcing the discourse, but rather allowing the meaning to emerge between the lines.”
